Charity Shops & Recycling

Main Paper Picture

Charity shops are great – the ultimate place for recycling as the least amount of energy has to be put back into the product to re-use it.

And most charity shops nowadays, far from being the musty, dusty shops of the past are, bright, colourfull and friendly places

Most charity shops will except small furniture such as coffee tables, magazine racks and chairs

Please remember to call your local charity shop to check whether they will accept larger furniture and electrical items as most shops have their own policy on these items.

Reusing (or repairing) a product is of course the best way to recycle it, and taking an item out of the waste collection system altogether saves much more energy in the process. Charity shops do exactly this – and create an income stream for the charity, thus helping a good cause in the process!

Most Charity shops will take a wide range of items and recycle them via their shop or shops via a central warehouse – some even take furniture and electrical items such as old vacuum cleaners and TV’s too – please check via our search and by calling the shop before you leave.

Items that charity shops will recycle include:

Household items such as; pictures, books, tapes, dvd, videos, LPs, lamps, frames

Clothing such as jumpers, suits, trousers, t-shirts, shirts, ties and shoes (in pairs!)

Jewellery such as; necklaces, rings, bangles, cufflinks and belts.

Bigger items and furniture including; sofas/setees, chairs, dining tables, wardrobes, chest of drawers, bedside tables

Stats

- Charity shops collect more than 15 million sacks of unwanted textiles and other materials from UK households each year

- Charity Shops divert more than 20,000 tonnes of textiles from landfill every year

- There are more than 9,000 charity shops in the UK and Republic of Ireland

So…

if you’re thinking of binning those old tapes and LP’s or clearing out your wardrobe remember your local charity shop!
